It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 7-28-14

All I can do is laugh at how drastically my life and time and priorities have shifted in the last month.  Reading and sharing reviews has been a weekly priority for me for so long, and now I find it takes me two weeks to read half the amount I used to read per week.  And while I know that I eventually need to amp it up (as I have commitments to the committee I am on), for now I will enjoy my crazy schedule with the little nugget sitting next to me.  He's just chillin, looking around, but as many of you know, my time here could be up at any moment!  So, I will be brief!

Book I Read this Week:

Frank Einstein and the Antimatter Motor by Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Brian Biggs
Amulet Books, 2014
Science Fiction
192 pages
Recommended for grades 2-4
(ARC)

I love Amulet Books, and I love Jon Scieszka.  But do I love this new series around Frank Einstein?

Well...I love that this new series is science fiction-the section in my classroom library that might just be the smallest of all genres.  It can be hard to find accessible science fiction texts for my 3rd & 4th grade readers.  This series will certainly fit the bill for my readership.  Is this amazing writing?  No.  And I feel confident that Mr. Scieszka would not be offended by that statement.  The book is geared toward a younger crowd with simple sentence structure throughout most of the story.  Sprinkle in humor, robots, a child genius and a dastardly plan by an evil kid scientist and we have a story that boys especially will have a fun time with!  Afterall, isn't Jon all about guys reading?!

Loving so far!

Thanks for stopping by!  In this short time I now have a screeching nugget demanding brunch.

Whew!  It's been a while since I've shared a review, and I don't have too much to share today because....I've been enjoying and snuggling and feeding and changing my sweet new baby boy!

Reading has taken a backseat, but it won't be that way forever.  And for now, I don't mind the change.  There might not be as much time for reading right now, but my new reading buddy sure is sweet!

Books I Read this...Month?

Time Out of Time: Beyond the Door by Maureen Doyle McQuerry
Amulet, 2014
Fantasy
375 pages
Recommended for grades 6+

This new fantasy series begins with a hefty book 1.  Young Timothy finds himself observing strange figures enter his home one night, and quickly finds himself wrapped up in world he never knew existed.  Mythology reigns high in this story.  Oddly, the book felt segmented to me, as though the beginning and ending were two separate stories-due to the vastly different settings and some character changes.
I enjoyed the book, and think that there are many readers as young as fourth grade (strong readers)  that would love to sink their teeth into this lengthy volume.  I can't stand behind it being free and clear appropriate for younger readers though because of a high school party scene that just doesn't seem right for fourth and fifth graders to read about.
There is a code along the bottom of many of the pages in this book.  I decoded the first page, but quickly realized that I was not going to have the time to decode the rest!  I think kids would love decoding the message though!
