Books I Read this Week:

Paperboy by Vince Vawter
Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 2013
Historical Fiction/Touch of Memoir
240 pages
Recommended for grades 6+

There is nothing I can find wrong with this beautiful story.  I truly came to care for the protagonist, an 11 year old boy dealing with not only growing up (which is hard enough) but also with a severe stutter, questions around his father, and a summer that will change him for good.  A coming of age tale that reminds us of the power of the spoken word.

Dark Graphic Tales by Edgar Allan Poe: The Gold Bug, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, and The Fall of the House of Usher
Adapted by Denise Despeyroux, Illustrated by Miquel Serratosa
Enslow Publishers, 2013
Graphic Novel
96 pages
Recommended for grades 5+

What fun, especially for lovers of the dark and gloomier types of stories!  These graphic adaptations will make Poe's tales accessible to younger readers, whereas older readers will still be just as captivated.  The artwork is as "off" as the characters being depicted, and I noticed that though I wouldn't say I like the art style, I like it here because it works so well.

    1. I am enjoying this book! It is one of those books that I am in no rush of finishing. It's not about how it will turn out, it's more about enjoying the story as it unfolds...savoring it.

  2. I LOVED In the Shadow of Blackbirds...what a debut novel! I also have The Coldest Girl in Coldtown on my TBR list. I have a few books in front of it, but hopefully I'll get to it right around Halloween.

    1. I was very surprised to read that it was her debut, because from the first page I was transported directly into her story! I have Coldest Girl on audio, but have a very loooong audio to finish first! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Hello there Nicole, I would also be featuring graphic novel adaptations of Poe's work this week, quite different from the one you have here though. Have a great reading week ahead of you! The Coldest Girl in Coldtown seems to be receiving a lot of attention recently.

  4. So pleased that you enjoyed Paper Boy so much. I just found Vawter's voice so vulnerable - wow. I suppose because it is so autobiographical. Loved Doll Bones. Holly Black is on a real roll. I also would like to read Coldest Girl . . .

    1. There was just so much packed into Paperboy for readers to think about. I am hoping it reaches out to young readers as much as it has for the adults I talked to about it!
