Books I Read this...Month?
Time Out of Time: Beyond the Door by Maureen Doyle McQuerry
Amulet, 2014
Fantasy
375 pages
Recommended for grades 6+
This new fantasy series begins with a hefty book 1. Young Timothy finds himself observing strange figures enter his home one night, and quickly finds himself wrapped up in world he never knew existed. Mythology reigns high in this story. Oddly, the book felt segmented to me, as though the beginning and ending were two separate stories-due to the vastly different settings and some character changes.
I enjoyed the book, and think that there are many readers as young as fourth grade (strong readers) that would love to sink their teeth into this lengthy volume. I can't stand behind it being free and clear appropriate for younger readers though because of a high school party scene that just doesn't seem right for fourth and fifth graders to read about.
There is a code along the bottom of many of the pages in this book. I decoded the first page, but quickly realized that I was not going to have the time to decode the rest! I think kids would love decoding the message though!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful reading week! Hope to be back next week...
Awww, congratulations! Loved seeing the picture! Your reading life does change, but it's all good! Enjoy your time and fit it in when you can. I learned a kindle is easier than a book, especially if nursing!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Love the photo! I can tell which month we adopted our sons just by looking at my reading notebook, because suddenly it plummets to basically no books finished for about three months straight! Parenting is certainly an adjustment in every kind of way. But now you'll have the pleasure of reading with your baby! Reading with my kids gives me so much joy. The cover of Time Out of Time appeals to me, but I usually don't have the patience for longer fantasy novels or series. Not my favorite reading. But I love learning about titles I can recommend without reading them myself, so thanks for the description!
ReplyDeleteHello there Nicole! Congratulations on your baby boy! That photo there is priceless - shows how much reading is interwoven into your mother-child relationship. Frank Einstein looks fun, and yes the book cover of Time out of Time is indeed visually appealing. Will be on the lookout for both titles. Meanwhile, enjoy your time with the newborn! :)
ReplyDeleteHe is beautiful!!!!!! Enjoy! Motherhood is amazing <3 <3 <3
