Books I've Read this Month:

Recommended for grades 5+

Sci-fi is not the genre I would choose to read if there were just about any other genre to choose from. So, to read TWO long sci-fi books back-to-back, what gives? Well, there was just something about these books that kept me turning pages. Maybe it was my interest in what would happen to Liam and Phoebe. Maybe it was the multi-layered plot that I just had to keep learning about. Or maybe it was the overlapping folds of time. No, it was not the time traveling, that hurts my simple brain. But whatever the reason, I kept on reading!

This little tiger just wants to be fearsome to anyone, so he sets off to scare someone. Turns out he's successful, but not in the way he meant to be! Cute illustrations!

For our littlest bookworms!
Black bird takes us through pages of sweet paint print illustrations, taking readers on a short journey through color. Adorable!

  1. The Chronicle of the Dark Star series has been on my TBR list since the first was published. Science fiction is not my genre of choice, but I have been pleasantly surprised when I've read the genre. I know there are students who enjoy the genre so it's good for me to read so I can make recommendations.

    1. Certainly I'm walking the walk by reading some sci-fi! If I want my students to read across genres I've got to model it...no matter how long I put it off ;) I remember sharing at morning meeting one day that I was not sure if I was enjoying the story or not, but that I couldn't stop reading it. It was an odd experience with a book, for sure. I'm interested to hear what you think!

  2. I just recently finished Last Day on Mars. I don't read much sci-fi, but I was completely into this one and have been looking forward to book #2. And would you believe I JUST checked out The Ocean Between Stars this week?! I would LOVE To win this giveaway. I have some preteens and teens who will really get into this series. *fingerscrossed* Thanks for sharing your recent reads and have a wonderful reading week!

    1. Awe, fingers crossed for you! I got through the second one quicker, I think. They kind of meld together for me since I read them back to back ;)

  3. I've discovered in the last year or so that I enjoy sci fi, even though it's almost never a genre I seek out. Thank goodness for reading challenges that get me out of my comfort zone so that I can discover these things! I really liked Be Prepared.

    1. Some sci-fi I can handle better than others, but either way, I always gravitate towards other books first! But you're right about reading challenges pushing us to explore. I ask my kids to, so I need to!

    1. Oh my goodness, I've read it aloud many times now, and love it more and more each time. It is always a hit, which is so lovely to experience. A simple and timeless story with real heart. My students have had some of their best conversations about character motives and actions as they navigate this story alongside the Penderwick girls. Love it so much!

  5. Funnily enough, I used to read so much science fiction when I was a kid/teen, but I haven't really picked up much sci fi as an adult! Maybe I should give the genre another go. :)

    1. Well, I'd recommend a few titles to you...but I'm not very knowledgeable on the topic ;)

  6. I had to return The Ocean Between the Stars to the library unread because I had too many books arrive at once. There just isn't enough time to read all the books I want to read! Be prepared is on my list of books I want to read if I ever manage to get to it.
