Books I Read this Week:
Science Comics: Polar Bears: Survival on the Ice by Jason Viola
Illustrated bu Zack Giallongo
First Second, 2019
Recommended for grades 3+
I may have said this before, but I can't share this book without repeating myself: I love the Science Comics series!
In this latest installment readers will follow a mother polar bear and her two young cubs, Anik and Ila. The cubs are being taught all there is to know about being a polar bear and surviving in their Arctic home. From eating and hunting (types of seals, which parts to eat, hunting techniques and methods), to interacting with other bears (who to avoid, body language, finding a mate), to the various types of ice (how they move, when they change, what aquatic creatures gather in the base layer).
I learned so much about polar bears, and the story, design, and layout all worked beautifully together.
Bad Kitty: Kitten Trouble by Nick Bruel
Roaring Brook Press, December 2018
Recommended for grades 3-5
She's back, and this time Kitty is displeased with her human's decision to welcome some new kittens into the house. Trouble has broken out in a nearby neighborhood, and it isn't safe for the kittens to be there. Kitty must open up her home to these displaced kittens, and she isn't feeling hospitable.
Uncle Murray makes an appearance to teach Kitty about the perks of meeting and learning about new people-and cats.
If you're starting to sense there may be some connection to Kitty's newest story and some American's thoughts, opinions, and actions, I'd say you're quite right.
